U.S. DOJ Issues Dear Colleague Letter on Transgender Students

On May 13, 2016 the United States Department of Justice and United States Department of Education- Office of Civil Rights issues a Dear Colleague Letter (‘DCL’) to school officials nationwide on the topic of transgender students and compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. The DCL provides guidance on how both DOJ and OCR will evaluate a school district’s compliance with Title IX and issues such as the use of locker rooms, bathrooms, amendment or correction of education records, and overnight accommodations on field trips.
